In cases of sex crimes and extreme violence, forensic medical examinations are carried out in order to document the injuries; a forensic certificate is then issued. A forensic certificate is a doctor’s certificate concerning injuries that have a bearing on a criminal investigation. The police request forensic certificates, and they can be issued for both victims and suspects, and used as evidence in a court of law. A forensic certificate can also be issued based on documentation in a patient’s journal.

A forensic certificate can only be issued by specially trained doctors. In cases of suspected sex crimes against women, forensic certificates are issued by gynaecologists. In cases of suspected crimes against children, forensic certificates are issued by paediatricians.
